Dear Washington University alumni and friends,

New Year’s greetings to you. I share this message today out of deep concern for you, your families, and the entire country of China as you experience the impact of the novel coronavirus. Please know that our entire community here in St. Louis has been thinking about you, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if there is anything we can do to be supportive during this time.

Unfortunately, due to the risks associated with the virus and guidance from the U.S. Department of State and the CDC, we have made the tough decision to cancel our regional events in Shanghai and Beijing on February 13 and 15. Again, I am deeply saddened to share this news, as I was really looking forward to meeting you, celebrating many of our recent successes, and sharing my updates and vision for WashU as your 15th Chancellor.

Please know that our decision to cancel should not in any way diminish our abiding commitment to our alumni, friends, and global partners in China. In fact, it’s during difficult times like these that we can rely on the strength of our robust and international alumni network, and I hope you take the opportunity to do so.

Indeed, at Washington University, we are a diverse and vibrant community comprising individuals from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. During my time as a former student, faculty member, as an alumnus, and now as Chancellor — I have come to find that it’s the people who make this place so special. To that end, please know how grateful I am for your continuous support of our mission, and I’m extremely honored to serve as your 15th Chancellor.

Once again, I am disappointed that I won’t get the chance to travel to China this time around. But rest assured, we will reschedule soon, so please continue to check your WashU communications so we can make it up to you.

In the meantime, warmest wishes on the New Year, please take extra precaution during this time, and don’t hesitate to reach out and let us know how we can be supportive.

  Sincerely,

  Andrew

  Dear Spartans,

We want to echo the recent statements from President Stanley and the University Physician that you are a valued member of the MSU community and you have our unwavering support.

MSU is continuously monitoring the situation and considering the various impacts that the outbreak may have on our students, scholars, and employees, including planned travel between the U.S. and China and ongoing concerns you may have about family and friends in affected regions.

MSU is ready to mobilize resources and offer assistance through the Office for International Students and Scholars.

  https://safe-campus.umn.edu/public-health-alerts

  Our Chinese Community

The Northwestern Community includes many members from China or who have family in China. It’s a very frightening time for anyone with loved ones there or connections to the country. Even as we must remain vigilant about screening for potential cases of the new virus, we also strongly urge you to lead with compassion towards our Chinese students, faculty, staff, and visitors, and to encourage your managers, direct reports, and teams to do the same.

Our first priority is trying to ensure the safety and security of our students, especially those at risk of contracting the virus, but that also means trying to do the same for students from China who are worried about their families and friends back home and need our support. Demonstrating compassion and expressing concern about the emotional well-being of students, faculty, and staff impacted by this situation is important. We want our community members to feel supported and not stigmatized.

  Incoming Travel

Northwestern is primarily relying on the infrastructure of public health agencies, airports and medical providers to manage the spread of the virus. Northwestern is not restricting access to campus by visitors from China or other countries.

For schools or units expecting travelers to arrive from China, please review the FAQs for additional guidance. It is important that you are clear with your expectations of visitors – if they have been in an area impacted by the virus or have had exposure to a person being tested for the virus, you should ask that they see a medical provider and that they are medically cleared before attending Northwestern programs.

If there are specific health concerns about a student already on campus, those cases should be referred to the Health Service. For specific health concerns involving faculty, staff, or other members of the community, follow the guidance in the FAQs. It is best to refer these individuals to the nearest emergency room or urgent care center.

As leaders of the University, it is important that we ensure our teams are aware of the situation and following the guidance put forward. We will commit to keeping information updated with any developments as they occur. Please share this message with your teams.
